Stunt work is a complex and multi-disciplinary craft. It can mean everything from basic safety measures for a simple fall to large scale battle scenes and rigging for flying multiple persons at once.
As the world’s northernmost stunt team, and the largest in Norway, Arctic Action delivers comprehensive stunt packages for any production.
Procedures
Our work with any scene starts with breaking down a script to identify stunt sequences, calculate costs and suggest solutions. We work closely with the director, producer and DoP to make sure we maintain the artistic vision while also staying within budget. We plan the action in detail, create choreography, decide on a team of performers for each specific scene, train actors and extras, and make risk assessments.
Stunt work is problem solving. Namely the problem of how to make an action scene as safe and performer-friendly as possible, while maintaining and enhancing visual impact and excitement. We plan for all eventualities and often use pre-visualisation videos as a tool in creating scenes.
A core principle for us is “The 5 Ts of stunt work”:
- Technique – the right one for the job
- Training – all the time
- Time – enough of it
- Testing – always
- Team work – we don´t work alone
Stunt performers
To be a successful stunt performer requires a high level of physical skill, industry knowledge, specialised training and experience. You also need the proper mindset – no daredevils tolerated.
We follow a progressive model of training and development where team members start out as safety assistants, then move on to become stunt performers and may eventually advance to assistant stunt coordinators, fight choreographers and stunt coordinators as they gather enough experience.
All our stunt performers have also taken first aid and health and safety for film courses.
Equipment
We stock a variety of stunt equipment – mats, crash pads, body pads, weapon replicas, rope, climbing gear, rigging and harnesses for flying and other wire work gags, and a lot more.
